The War in Ukraine will destablelize Europe for years. A new cold war between democracies and dictatorships is emerging during the unbelieveble suffering of the Ukrainian people.
While the russian dictator is invading Ukraine and wants to occupy it against the people’s will, Europe must engage in a containment strategy as did President Truman during the Cold War. The West has to support at 100% the Ukrainians if it wants to help him, save democracies and restore trust toward its allies. Western leaders have abandonned the Syrian people and the Kurds in 2019 as well as the Afghans in 2021. How many treasonous acts will they do until they have meyham in front of them?
Moldova, Georgia, Sweden and Finnland must be supported as good as possible. Sanctions against Putin and the other oligarchs must be more severe. Democracies must realize that Putin will not tolerate a democratic Europe unless the european leaders show strengh. It is embarrasing that a president of remarkable nation like Russia only believe in violence and the rule of the stongest.
I believe that without giving in to the legitime demands of the ukrainian people, there will be permanent instability in Ukraine as it was in Chechenya and in soviet-occupied Afghanistan. I fear Ukraine could escalate even after an eventuel official capitulation into chaos. Denmark and Turkey could threten Russia to block maritime coastlines, when they refuse to negociate with the ukrainian resistance to at least limit the conflict.
Ukraine, Russia and Belarus once formed the first russian state, then the russian Empire, then the Soviet Union, then they all three decided to disolve the USSR in 1991 and now the three slavic nations are spilling their own blood. Not only Ukraine, but also Russia will fall into a state that resembles the fall of many great Empires. It often took one war to let it deintegrating, but in his madness Putin is ready to ruin Russia’s and other countries‘ present and future in order to play the opportunistic empire-builder. As often empire which are build on sand, fall a short time after, but for an old bastard like Putin, the deluge can come after him.
Most likely, Putin could be stopped by the russian people, or the russian army or or the russian oligarchs. Albeit, anti-putin popular movements are harshly repressed and many oligarchs and generals are thinking to replace the 70-year old Putin in a near future. Maybe Putin could face a coup d’Etat after becoming unpopular within his own country through a fratricide war.
I would gladly welcome an inner circle of courageous conspirators as a new politburo, if they deputinise Russia and bring peace back to Europe.
